J. J. Thomson

British physicist (1856-1940)

Sir Joseph John "J. J." Thomson was a British physicist whose study of cathode rays led to his discovery of the electron, a subatomic particle with a negative electric charge. In 1897, Thomson showed that cathode rays were composed of previously unknown negatively charged particles, which he calculated must have bodies much smaller than atoms and a very large charge-to-mass ratio.
